What running cadence means

Running cadence is the number of steps you take each minute, counting both feet. It describes your step rhythm rather than how fast or how far you run.

Why cadence can matter

Cadence can add useful context when you review running form. Compare it with pace, comfort, stride length, terrain, and your own running history rather than treating it as a score on its own.

There is no single perfect cadence

Cadence varies with the runner, height, speed, terrain, and experience. Faster running often raises cadence naturally, so 180 steps per minute is not a requirement or universal ideal. Cadence is only one part of running form.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial units and enter the run distance.
  2. Enter the elapsed hours, minutes, and seconds.
  3. Select whether you know total steps or cadence, then enter that value.
  4. Use results to compare similar runs instead of forcing a number from a different pace or terrain.

Running cadence is not a medical measurement. If you are returning from injury or changing your running form, make changes gradually and consider advice from a qualified coach or healthcare professional.
