How the age grade estimate works
Age grading converts a race result into a percentage by comparing the athlete's finish time with a reference time for the same sex, age, and distance:
Age grade = reference time / athlete time x 100.
This is the same broad approach described by parkrun: take a runner's time and compare it with a gender-and-age benchmark. parkrun does not publish its exact calculation table, so this RunCalcs tool uses the road-event rows from Howard Grubb's `wavacalc15.xls` WAVA 2015 workbook for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon. Official masters competitions, official age-graded rankings, and exact parkrun result matching should use the table specified by that event or platform.
Worked example: 55-year-old man, 5K road in 22:30
In `wavacalc15.xls`, the male 5K road open standard is 12:59 and the age-55 coefficient is 0.8466. The reference time is 12:59 divided by 0.8466, or about 15:20. A 22:30 result is therefore about 68.2%.
Interpreting the percentage
- 90%+ is normally world-class territory.
- 80-89% is often national-class or very strong club racing.
- 70-79% is competitive regionally or in strong local fields.
- 60-69% is usually a solid local competitive standard.
- Below 60% can still represent meaningful progress, especially for newer runners or runners returning from time away.

Is this an official WMA age grade?
No. It uses road-event rows from Howard Grubb's `wavacalc15.xls` WAVA 2015 workbook. parkrun says its own table is not public and is only loosely based on WMA tables, so exact parkrun percentages may differ. For official scoring, use the calculator specified by the race, platform, or governing body.
Why does the same time score differently by age and sex?
Age grading accounts for expected performance differences by age and sex. The same 5K time may therefore represent a different relative standard for a 25-year-old, a 55-year-old, and a 75-year-old.
Can I compare a 5K with a marathon?
Yes, but use the result as a broad comparison. Different distances reward different physiology, pacing skill, fueling, durability, and course conditions.
What should I do with my score?
Use it to compare your own performances across years and distances, set realistic benchmark targets, or understand how a masters result compares with open-age racing standards.
